Mountain geography among representations, projects and tourist development processes. In recent years, mountain areas have received increasing attention from both a multidisciplinary academic and political perspective. However, in the context of mountain geography, there is still no shared identification of mountain areas that goes beyond mere altitude and orographic criteria. Thus, this paper firstly aims to shed light on the concept of mountains, underlining the importance of defining and interpreting mountains as a baseline for the development of territorial policies. Although mountains are traditionally recognized as marginal, weak and peripheral areas, tourism and planning have been recognized as an important vector for countering the effects of marginalization and for the revitalization of these areas. In light of these considerations, this paper also aims at analysing the current project initiatives in the Italian mountains, through a selected sample of 250 initiatives located in the Alpine and Apennine areas of the country. The study offers a theoretical contribution, through the analysis of the tourist projects and the identification of two different profiles attributable to the Alpine and Apennine areas. The research also provides practical implications that enable a better understanding of how to improve tourism planning in the most disadvantaged contexts of the Italian mountains.

; The recent changes in production organization at global scale highlighted the strategic importance of logistics business that develops a close interdependence with territories, in terms of nodes localization, networks and flows distribution. It is clear therefore, the importance of thematic cartography in order to represent these processes, analyze their specific characteristics and outline possible scenarios. However, existing programming and planning documents (at regional or local scale) address the issue of logistics in different ways, within studies on transport systems, analysis of industrial sites, or more rarely through an integrated territorial approach. In the latter case, the importance of thematic cartography is clear, because it is useful both to assess the weight of logistics sector within local economic systems, and to identify possible development paths. The contribution, therefore, aims to outline a specific role for the cartographic analysis with regard to logistics, starting from a work carried out by the authors within a project called "Piedmont Advanced Logistics Integration Objective" (PALIO). In particular, on the basis of the data collected during the period 2008-2010 some thematic maps, representing the distribution of goods flows and the location of logistics nodes in Eastern Piedmont, were realized. Scenario maps were also carried out, in order to outline the effects of those territorial localizing choices. The cartography proposed represents both a progress from a cognitive point of view both an effective tool for addressing public policy choices on the configuration of logistic activities at different territorial scales.
